The Suez Canal Authority next year will raise its tolls by 6% for all ships except LNG carriers and cruise ships. This is due to the fact that the tourism sector has been hit hard by the pandemic and it's this sector that has the greatest losses. The new transit fees will take effect from February.

Egypt is working to widen and deepen the southern part of the Suez Canal, where the container ship Ever Given ran aground, blocking the waterway for six days in March.

The engineering work includes a 10 km extension of the second lane of the waterway, opened in 2015, making the two-lane canal 82 km long.
